Role: End-to-end UX/UI Designer
Duration: 3 months
The main research goal is we want to know how people plan their finances in moving to a new place domestically to a specific area so that we can provide a budgeting tool that encapsulates useful services.
I used comparative research with similar companies using SWOT analysis and user interviews with four people all mid 20s who have had experience moving.
I used SWOT analysis between You Need A Budget (YNAB), MonarchMoney, and PocketGuard.
Strengths: offer various budgeting tools, have high security to protect against data breaches, and able to be used on web, iOS, and Android.
Weaknesses: other competitors that can offer more tools, price differences between competitors, and bad UI navigation.
Interview Findings: two out of the four people I interviewed did not use any type of budgeting app, spreadsheet etc. to help plan their finances. All four interviewees said that family and/or friends helped them move to their new residenceAll of them moved because of a new work opportunity
By understanding both the business and user perspective, I was able to come up with most important goals for each
I used a hybrid card sorting and used 5 participants to help identify how users would find information. The results of this helped me construct a sitemap, which then lead to user flows and task flows.
I started with sketching out ideas for what the website would look and then created a digital version on the one I liked the best.
I used the name "Reelo" from relocation and decided on a green color scheme for financial aspect with a blue secondary color. A cool color palette was chosen for the user to feel calm and relaxed. The logo is a moving box with a money coin coming out of it to signify the saving while moving identity. I was able to create a UI component library based around the brand values of Reliability, Dependability, Security, Trust, Confidence, and Satisfaction.
Based on the low fidelity and UI component library, I was able to incorporate the design elements to make it high fidelity.
I created a prototype from my high fidelity design in Figma. This prototype was sent out to five participants with wide age range and who all had experience moving. All participants were able to complete the task within 15 minute time frame.
Based on user feedback, there were only slight revisions to be made on the high fidelity design such as color change, new titles for some of the cards, and some contrast to the hero sections in each page.
This whole case study was a learning and growing experience. Having no prior experience and doing all these steps on my own, with some guidance, was really rewarding although some points were stressful. Learning by doing was the best method for this process because I was able to learn one step at a time with a project attached to get that hands on experience.
