Reelo: Moving app

A Case Study
Project Overview
I chose the topic of "moving to a new place" since many people have experienced this problem. Utilizing research I focused on the financial aspects of moving as the main objective while also offering other services to help alleviate other stressful factors. The end product is a high fidelity prototype showcasing a couple of the services in the mobile website.
Background Problem
Moving to a new place can be intimidating to someone because they need to plan everything accordingly. With people still moving to cities with high living costs, utilizing the various steps of the moving process to constrain to a budget will be beneficial.

Role: End-to-end UX/UI Designer
Duration: 3 months

Research

Research Goal and Methodologies

The main research goal is we want to know how people plan their finances in moving to a new place domestically to a specific area so that we can provide a budgeting tool that encapsulates useful services.
I used comparative research with similar companies using SWOT analysis and user interviews with four people all mid 20s who have had experience moving.

Research Findings

I used SWOT analysis between You Need A Budget (YNAB), MonarchMoney, and PocketGuard.
Strengths: offer various budgeting tools, have high security to protect against data breaches, and able to be used on web, iOS, and Android.
Weaknesses: other competitors that can offer more tools, price differences between competitors, and bad UI navigation.

Interview Findings: two out of the four people I interviewed did not use any type of budgeting app, spreadsheet etc. to help plan their finances. All four interviewees said that family and/or friends helped them move to their new residenceAll of them moved because of a new work opportunity

Project Goals

By understanding both the business and user perspective, I was able to come up with most important goals for each

Define

Point of View Statements

  • Currently, people who move find it stressful to relocate to cities in the northeast. This is because of high expensive living. As a result, they experience financial stress.
  • I’d like to explore ways to help young adults (mid 20s to mid 30s) who are in the process of moving to be able to find housing based on their income because of anxiety behind being able to afford living expenses.
  • I’d like to explore ways to help people who move to a new city for work to be able to search housing listings and learn local customs because of the difficulty people have with accommodating to a new place.

How Might We Questions

  • How might we create a platform to help budget finances and recommend services based on the area a person moves to?
  • How might we create a platform to suggest attainable housing (partnership with real estate services) in a certain area based on user income?
  • How might we create a platform to alleviate stress during a move that offers budgeting plans and relaxation programs (partnerships with self care and wellness brands)?

Information Architecture

I used a hybrid card sorting and used 5 participants to help identify how users would find information. The results of this helped me construct a sitemap, which then lead to user flows and task flows.

Design

Low Fidelity Wireframe

I started with sketching out ideas for what the website would look and then created a digital version on the one I liked the best.

Brand Identity

I used the name "Reelo" from relocation and decided on a green color scheme for financial aspect with a blue secondary color. A cool color palette was chosen for the user to feel calm and relaxed. The logo is a moving box with a money coin coming out of it to signify the saving while moving identity. I was able to create a UI component library based around the brand values of Reliability, Dependability, Security, Trust, Confidence, and Satisfaction.

High Fidelity

Based on the low fidelity and UI component library, I was able to incorporate the design elements to make it high fidelity.

Test

Usability Testing

I created a prototype from my high fidelity design in Figma. This prototype was sent out to five participants with wide age range and who all had experience moving. All participants were able to complete the task within 15 minute time frame.

Task Flow

  • Create an Account
  • Locate Budget Option
  • Locate Networking Option
Try the Prototype

Revision

Based on user feedback, there were only slight revisions to be made on the high fidelity design such as color change, new titles for some of the cards, and some contrast to the hero sections in each page.

Conclusion

Final Thoughts

This whole case study was a learning and growing experience. Having no prior experience and doing all these steps on my own, with some guidance, was really rewarding although some points were stressful. Learning by doing was the best method for this process because I was able to learn one step at a time with a project attached to get that hands on experience.

Far far away, behind the word mountains, far from the countries Vokalia and Consonantia, there live the blind texts. Separated they live in Bookmarksgrove right at the coast of the Semantics, a large language ocean. A small river named Duden flows by their place and supplies it with the necessary regelialia. It is a paradisematic country, in which roasted parts of sentences fly into your mouth.
